Stop At: Elterwater, Elterwater, Lake District, Cumbria, England

This small lake lies half a mile south-east of the village of the same name. Both are situated in valley of Great Langdale. In the past, the principal industries have been farming, quarrying for slate and gunpowder manufacture. The first two activities continue, while evidence of the latter survives in the grounds of the Langdale Estate, a holiday development founded in the 1930s.

Stop At: Dungeon Ghyll, Ambleside LA22 9JU, UK

An impressive 40-foot waterfall, Dungeon Ghyll is a deep ravine on the north side of the valley, starting on the fell slopes between Harrison Stickle and Loft Crag/Pike o’ Stickle and was described in Wordsworth’s ‘The Idle Shepherd-Boys’. The site was loved by Victorian poets and is still as spectacular today.

Stop At: Blea Tarn, Little Langdale England

The beautiful Blea Tarn is situated in a small hanging valley between Great Langdale and Little Langdale. The tarn itself was shaped by glacial ice moving over the col from nearby Great Langdale. The tarn was characterised in 1969 as being low in nutrients and acidic but not having suffered from fertiliser pollution. Brown trout, perch and pike can all be found in the tarn.

Stop At: Loughrigg, Loughrigg, Lake District, Cumbria, England

Loughrigg Tarn is a small, secluded and picturesque natural lake, rarely being visible from the fells. It is situated north of Windermere, just north of Skelwith Bridge village at the foot of Loughrigg Fell. The Tarn was a favoured place of William Wordsworth, who, in his Epistle to Sir George Howland Beaumont Bart, likened it to “Diana’s Looking-glass…round, clear and bright as heaven”, in reference to Lake Nemi, the mirror of Diana in Rome.
