Why choose this Peterborough tour ?
This tour is great for anyone making a day trip from London. We would meet you outside Peterborough Station (45 minutes from London) or indeed from anywhere else you might be travelling.
The site of Peterborough Cathedral was originally Roman, in the 7th century it became a monastic community though that was all but destroyed by the Great Heathen army under the splendidly named Ivar the Boneless. The current Peterborough Cathedral was built after the Norman conquest and seen of activity since then and two queens were buried here including Katherine of Aragon whose tomb we will visit.
From here we will make a short journey to the beautiful small town of Crowland which despite it’s modest size is home to two remarkable historical places of interest.
The first of which is Crowland Abbey with its picturesque ruins and often dramatic history. Nearby is the unique medieval Trinity Bridge, said to be the biggest curiously in the country.

In the middle of the large Cathedral Square is the Guildhall. In the middle of the large city square is the wonderful old Guildhall. Built originally in 1671 it has served as both a market and a townhall. A farmers market is still held here regularly along with many over events in the square.
It’s a wonderful old building and sat next to beautiful old medieval church.
Built from the remains of an even older church, The present building was dedicated by Abbot Genge on 26th June 1407 and dedicated to St John the Baptist.
Holy Trinity Bridge was built in 1360-1390 by Benedictine monks. Until the early 17th century the River Welland flowed through the village and divided into two channels under the bridge. Water was directed to the nearby monastery through a water gate.
The bridge now stands high and dry near the market place in Crowland.
It is unique in Britain. It is formed of three pointed half-arches in the form of a triangle which we can walk underneath and marvel at this fantastic medieval structure.
Crowland Abbey is a Church of England parish church. However it was formerly part of a Benedictine abbey church and we can walk around its striking ruins and learn some of the incredible history that took place here.
