Here you enter into the part of the city which used to be inside the city walls. You will see the outside of several colleges of the University of Oxford and learn about the history of the University and entertaining anecdotes about the many famous people who have studied here.
This is the main ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford, where students attend graduation. Hear about the building of one of the first work’s of architecture of Sir Christopher Wren. We will stop to look at the building but will not be going inside.
A great place for a photo stop, the Bridge of Sighs is one of Oxford’s famous landmarks. Your guide will tell you stories about some of the famous movies filmed in this part of the city and show you the hidden passageway to one of Oxford’s famous pubs!
The Bodleian Library is one of 6 copyright libraries in the UK and was founded in the 17th century (although the first Oxford University library was established in the 14th century). Your guide will tell you the story of the Bodleian Library and its famous collections and some of the famous movies filmed in these buildings. You will not go inside the Bodleian Library on this tour but will see the buildings from the outside.
Radcliffe Square with its stunning Radcliffe Camera is in the area often called ‘the heart of the University’. Enjoy the atmosphere of this charming old cobbled square surrounded by university buildings. During exam times at the University you will see the students wearing their traditional academic dress and maybe having a celebration or two!
The beautiful church of St Mary the Virgin has been on this site since the 11th century and was where the University’s first library and ceremonial hall was located. Watch the people walking around the top of the spire! Your guide will tell you how you can do this after your tour and enjoy panoramic views of the city.
Savour the atmosphere of one of Oxford’s oldest cobbled streets and see the buildings of Merton College (one of the 3 oldest colleges of the University). You will see the college from the outside but will not go inside.
Your next stop is in gorgeous Christ Church Meadows. You will see Christ Church College and hear stories of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and Harry Potter. Entry to Christ Church is not included in the group price of the tour. Your guide will tell you how you can visit the inside of the college after your tour.
From Christ Church Meadows you head back into the centre of the city. Enjoy a walk through Oxford’s Victorian Covered Market with its tempting sights and smells. Your tour finishes just outside the market so you can go back inside and catch a refreshment.
