What makes Galway Historic River Corrib Walking Tour a unique experience ?
Starting at the historic Spanish Arch which gets its name from Galway’s trade with Spain. Here we will discover the history of the Claddagh, the old city port and fish market and the foundation of the city.
During this section of the tour we will discover the trail between Wolftone Bridge and O’Brien’s Bridge. It is here that that the journey of discovery continues where we will see the Fisheries Tower, the River Corrib – the fastest flowing river in a urban setting and the McDonnagh fertiliser mill.
The second section of the River Corrib Walk we will discover the history behind the city’s use of the river and the harnessing of its power for the various mills, breweries, distilleries and power stations along its course.
Spanning the river for over two centuries, the Salmon Weir Bridge has seen many major events over the years. It once connected the Gaol (Jail) to the courthouse, and witnessed the harvesting of the Eels from the Sargasso sea and beyond. The Salmon Weir Bridge has seen many thing during its lifetime…if only it could talk.
Built on the site of the of city Gaol (Jail), Galway Cathedral is the youngest stone built cathedral in Europe. Dominating the skyline of the city the Cathedral is a beautiful example of Romanesque Architecture and engineering and is an oasis of calm in a busy city.
Come and discover the site of the old potato market, where the river Corrib continues above the weir to the lough. If we are lucky, we will see the rowers from the various rowing clubs rowing the river or preparing to do their training. It is here that we can sit and watch the world go by on the many benches here and marvel at the scenery.
Finishing at Steamers Quay we can see parts of the University and the old supports of the Viaduct that once supported the old Clifden to Galway Railway line and where the old steam boats would travel from Galway to the inner parts of Lough Corrib and the towns upon its shoreline.
