Stop At: Dunlewey, Dunlewey, County Donegal

Altan Castle:

Situated in the glacial valley at the edge of Lough Altan is an abandoned dwelling known as Altan Farm or Altan Castle. It is steeped in history with evictions and also with the ‘sheep war’. An ideal place for a picnic and to wow at the beautiful scenery.

Waterfalls and Stepping Stones:
Your walk through the bogland wilderness passes by two beautiful waterfalls, with one just at by Altan Castle. The entrance to the Castle requires crossing over a wide stream via stepping stones.

Bogland:
This hike takes you through stunning blanket bog in mozaic with wet and dry heaths. This and the nearby hills and mountains are bathed in ever changing light.

Difficulty and Clothing:
This hike has some moderately difficult sections, suitable for people with moderate fitness. Walking sticks are recommended. Warm and waterproof clothing as well as proper hiking boots are required.

Altan Lough – Glacial Lake
Altan Lough is a glacial lake sitting at the bottom of Aghla Mór mountain which towers over it at a height of 581 meters. It’s fringed with sand and on a hot day this is perfect for dipping hot feet.
